When Giuseppe Cipriani opened this bar in 1931 with the support of his American financier friend, Harry Pickering, he unknowingly created one of the world’s most popular watering holes, attracting the likes of Hemingway, Welles and Onassis. As you make your way through the narrow entrance beside the bar you may be surprised to find that it is hardly anything to write home about (by its looks in any case). Still, there is little doubt that this popular haunt effortlessly delivers sophistication and panache along with the finest cocktails (albeit the priciest) from its signature Bellini (a marvelous blend of Prosecco and white peach nectar) to itsmartinis, making it revered by locals in addition to curious tourists. Pop upstairs, where you can enjoy a fine Venetian meal, beginning with none other than Harry’s famous carpaccio.
